Report about the conference of Keith Henderson
During the conference the author Keith Anderson talked about his is latest novel Acqua Sacra, a book that deals with a Canadian woman of Italian origins, who, after a troubled period in Canada mainly due to the death of her father and the difficult relationship with her husband and children, decides to come back to his origins as her father, before dying, had asked her to. Once arrived a series of unlucky event will endanger her.
One of the main aspects of the conference was the metaphor of the sheep in the text. Before talking about the figure of sheep Keith wanted to give us a lesson about metaphor which for him are used to express larger meaning, a symbolic language that does not mean just one thing it means as he said a "set of things" comparing it to quantum mechanics.
Regarding the sheep Keith said that this words of course represent the animal but is also used to indicate a community, in this case the Abruzzo people and the shepherd is not just a shepherd, but is somebody that makes laws like the Government. He wanted to let us understand that a good work of art is something that the reader has to understand with his imagination with the aim of truly understanding what the real thoughts of the writer are.
Anderson talks also about some other remarkable metaphors that are in the book. Those are the "chicken coop" that for him is the symbol of rural honest and simple life, and the "Roman villa" that is the exact opposite of the chicken coop, a more exciting life but at the same time more dangerous and also meaning that in many cases money does not give the same satisfaction as a normal rural life.
The last topic of the conference was the theme of illegality, that in many parts of the text comes out. In this regard Henderson talks about the word p.o.g.g acronym for Pace, Order ,Good Government that is one of the right that is BNA act or in other words the Canadian Constitution and the main character of the story Suzanne is definitively a great example of p.o.g.g for her correct and modest attitude and for this reason Ted gives to her crutches the name of poggsticks. A good example of Suzanne is the fact that she doesn't like the excess of richness that is in Versaille as M. Antoniette did. This argument was introduced by the example of immigration in Italy that is just another way of making money for Mafia and underworld and in this case we are missing the concept of p.o.g.g.. Henderson also said in the book is mentioned a fat and lazy Russian sheep that just begs for food that refers to the Russian dictatorship of Putin that whit his egoism ignores his own people for his interest going against everything represented by p.o.g.g.
